I discovered on January 26,2026 I've been breathing CO approximately six months out of the year for at least three years and possibly over ten years from a "ventless" natural gas wall heater in my garage. I craft in my garage in the cold months with that heater running cranked up. I've had at least five episodes of feeling drunk in the garage but having no alcohol, stumbling, heavy legs, puking, and barely making it into my house to pass out in my recliner.
Once I felt my body go limp after leaving the garage to use the bathroom, on the toilet my body flopped on my lap and I felt paralyzed for around an hour before my husband helped me get off of the toilet and put me in my recliner.
Ai literally saved my life. On January 26, 2026, the morning after one of those drunken feelings in the garage, I wondered if it would be cheaper to keep running the ventless garage heater to heat the garage, or would it be cheaper to turn that off and open the door to the house and let the house heat into the garage, so I took a picture of that garage heater and uploaded it to Gemini and asked which would be cheaper to heat the garage and Gemini said, shut off that heater and get out of the garage now!! Gemini said the soot on the natural gas heater was proof of carbon monoxide being produced.
I turned the heater off and messaged my Dr thru the portal asking what I should do, she took almost two days to respond and said I should probably go to the ER for oxygen therapy.
So I did and after two days of not breathing CO my COhb level was 4.4%.
The morning Ai told me about the CO, I woke up that morning to my ears ringing and they are still ringing as well as popping, and after ear pops,my hearing is muffled for hours every day.
I asked my Dr if the problems I had thru the years, like freezing fingers and toes, reynauds, seeing Tinkerbell like lights in the shower, mucousy bowel movements, then the ear popping and ringing could all be from.the carbon monoxide poisoning, she said well you're symptoms are all so vague, it could be co poisoning or it might not be.
I asked her for a referral to get a brain MRI and she said that would do no good because I didn't have a previous MRI to compare a new one to.
So I begged her for something, and she said I should get cognitive testing, so I did that and while most of my results were pretty average, my processing score was definitely lower than all my other results.
So here I am in real time trying to get shit done and getting the runaround at every turn it seems. I called a law firm today and they said because the heater was bought in 2013, they don't want the case. I said but I just realized in January that it's been producing carbon monoxide, she said no thanks. It's frustrating because most people are clueless about carbon monoxide poisoning, I know I had no clue about it. I had no clue about incomplete combustion, no clue that soot on a natural gas heater meant it was producing carbon monoxide, no clue that a natural gas flame should be blue and if it is orange and flickering then it's producing carbon monoxide. But I sure know all about it now that the damage has been done. They should teach us about all of that in school so we are at least somewhat aware of signs to look for.

[…] This proposed rule was the result of 15 years of efforts from the CPSC to make generators safe. It was killed during the first Trump administration. During the Biden administration a much watered down version of the 2017 era rule was again set for hearings, but that rule making didn’t make it to the end of the process before the second Trump administration tabled it.
