Were there fully functioning CO alarms in the Lewisville Texas carbon monoxide poisoning? If so, why would there have not been an evacuation before five people were unconscious?
It has been a bad few weeks for carbon monoxide poisonings, but this sounds like one of the more severe cases. While no one died, finding five people unconscious means that all five were near death. Carbon monoxide poisoning in an apartment complex is usually the result of neglect. We wonder if this poisoning was result of a maintenance.
UPDATE: Reports are now that the cause of the poisoning was a disconnected exhaust pipe.
Were there CO detectors on the premises? While CO alarms are not perfect, in no situation should levels ever get to the point where five people are unconscious, before they have alarmed.
The news report doesn’t talk about what the ambient levels were, but it almost a guarantee that those levels were approaching 500 ppm. Otherwise, before the 5th person became unconscious, someone would have determined that the environment was making them all sick.
We will keep an eye on this story and update it as more details become available. For more on the kind of neglect seen in apartment complex poisonings, click here.
